Old New Year And New Old Goals

Today is January 14th, which is great news for you if your 2022 New Year’s resolutions have already fallen apart like some of mine have. Why? Because it’s Old New Year! This is a holiday based off the Julian calendar rather than the Gregorian one we typically use in the world today, where the former celebrates days like Christmas and New Years two weeks later.

In a way, it’s a wonderful reason to reflect on how the first fortnight of the year has been going for you and to readjust any goals, values and habits as needed. While it’s only been two weeks, there’s a whole 50 more to go. Another way of conceptualizing it would be saying that you get to re-live the amount of time that has passed this year so far with 25 more iterations.

So far, I made an artwork, read two books, and kept up with my daily yoga and writing practices. I also tried new things, like consistent blogging and making a podcast. I’m where I need to be for the most part, but I could be doing more as I feel like I’m missing the mark on some of my other personal projects. I welcome the reset Old New Year brings and look forward to seeing how the next two weeks play out.

It’s important to be kind and patient with yourself knowing you have time. You do. And time is the most valuable currency we have, so it’s best to spend it wisely doing what you enjoy with good company.

The only certain thing is uncertainty, and the only constant is change. We’ve all been through a lot over the past few years, so don’t put undue pressure on yourself trying to force this year to be the best or something it just might not be. There’s plenty of time to turn it around. The day/month/year is not lost.

Work on building yourself up and the life you want to live. It’s never too late to start something new or change something old. It all begins with you and where you choose to direct your attention. Will you be happy if your life is exactly the way it is now in two weeks? What about in two months? Two years? Twenty? If the thought of that makes you want to vomit, it may be necessary to start making small changes now to achieve a level of self-care where you don’t feel the need to regularly escape your life.

A lot can happen in a year, and changing your entire life can easily happen within just two months. It may not seem like anything is happening in the oftentimes autopilot motions of the day, but the progress is there, just waiting for you to look up one day and notice it. Life is a journey, so don’t try to jump ahead. One day you’ll look back to where you are now. Be kind to your future self and your past self by balancing the two with the things you say and do as your present self. Everything is, and will be, alright.

Happy Old New Year! If 2022 was off to a rocky start, you get a free pass for a second chance at it!

Also, if you want to learn something new today, the binary # for 47 is 101111 🙂 And for 42 it is 101010!
